About Aquaponics

Aquaponics is a mixture of Hydroponics and Aquaculture.

  • Hydroponics: Cultivation of crops in water
  • Aquaculture: Farming of Fish in-land or in the sea

In hydroponics, there is a need to use synthetic fertilisers in order for the crops to grow.  In Aquaponics, those synthetic fertilisers are replaced with Fish; Fish waste is what fertilises the crops.

Just like with traditional Agriculture, Farmers use manure which is animal wastes.  In Aquaponics, since the crops are grown in water, the process uses fish waste.

In Aquaculture, there is a need to keep the water clean for the fish.  Filters are used to capture the fish waste that is then discarded.  Nitrate accumulation is also detrimental to the fish, and toxic water must therefore be replaced regularly.

However, Aquaponics makes the most out of the resources available.  In other words, the waste is recycled and there is no need to change water since the crops will absorb it to grow.  Aquaponics uses up to 90% less water than traditional Agriculture.

The Benefits of Aquaponics

As a growing technique:

  • Uses up to 90% less water than traditional Agriculture
  • Grows up to 5 times the amount of crops than traditional Agriculture in the same amount of space
  • 100% environment-friendly – zero waste discharged
  • Produces both plants and fish
  • Less time-consuming than traditional agriculture
  • Less labor-intensive than traditional agriculture
  • Requires no physical efforts
  • Requires no level of education
  • Can be done indoors

Aquaponics produce:

  • 100% Natural
  • More nutritious than traditional Agriculture
  • Bigger in size
  • Grows faster
  • Superior quality
  • Longer storage life
  • Plastic-free Fish
  • Hormones-free Fis

2. Rapid Fire Q&As

Can I do Aquaponics at Home?

Yes.

Can I do Aquaponics on my rooftop?

Yes.

Can I do Aquaponics indoors?

Yes.

Can I do Aquaponics if I am vegetarian?

Yes.

Can I eat Aquaponics produce if I am vegan?

That depends on your definition of vegan.  Just like manure in the form of animal waste is used to grow vegetables in the soil, manure in the form of fish waste is used to grow vegetables in water.

Does Aquaponics need electricity 24/7?

Yes.

What happens if there is a power cut?

That depends on the duration of the power cut.  For instance, we design and build Aquaponics System in such a way that in case of a power cut, your Fish will be safe for 12-24 hours (Depends on the crop you have in your system).  Alternatively, you can use a backup, in the form of power generators or air/water pumps with batteries.

What can I grow in Aquaponics?

Any plants that need water to grow, will grow.  However, certain crops perform better than others.  Different types of plants also requires different types of care.  The Aquaponics concept remains the same irrespective of which crop you grow.

Which fish is used in Aquaponics?

Aquaponics is mostly freshwater, we use Freshwater fish.  E.G. Tilapia, Jade Perch, Koi, Goldfish, Catfish.

What is the cost of an Aquaponics System for home?

We have Standard Aquaponics Kits starting Rs 55,000 inclusive of VAT onwards.  Ultimately, Aquaponics System can be customized based on the space available, the materials to be used, crops to be grown, fish to be farmed and the budget available.

Is an Aquaponics System good looking?

It depends on the materials used for construction.  Basically, it depends on your budget.  The higher the budget, the better looking it becomes.  Lower cost systems can be built using second-hand equipment but by doing so we sacrifice the aesthetic aspect of it.

How much space do I need for a Home Aquaponics System?

It depends on the size of the system.  For instance, our Standard Aquaponics Kits requires 6m x 2m or 3m x 3m or 5m x 2m.  The setup can be arranged differently or customized based on the space available.

How much time do I need to operate an Aquaponics System?

Irrespective of the size, the daily operations requires from 5-15 minutes.  However, the bigger the size, the more time is needed to sow, transplant and harvest.

What needs to be done in terms of operations?

Feed the fish, clean filter, test water parameters and adjust accordingly.

What is the payback period for investment in home Systems?

It depends on the size and materials used.  For instance, our Standard Aquaponics Kits have a payback period of 1.5-3 years.

Can Aquaponics be done as a Business?

Yes.

Is there a market for Aquaponics produce?

Yes.

Do I need to sell the fish?

Yes and no.  Revenue from Fish is approximately 10% of the total revenue.  Some people prefer not to harvest the Fish as it may seem cruel to them, but then you need to give up 10% of your revenue.

Is there a market for Aquaponics fish?

Yes.

How much does Aquaponics for business cost?

It depends on the scale.  The recommended size is 250m2 upwards.  Investment is Rs 2,000,000 upwards.

Why is Aquaponics more expensive than traditional agriculture?

Compared to traditional Agriculture, Aquaponics needs a number of additional equipment.  The highest cost for instance is the cost of Tanks, which is not needed in traditional Agriculture.

If Aquaponics is more expensive, why not stick to traditional Agriculture?

Even if it is more expensive, it also brings in more revenue than traditional Agriculture.  The increase in revenue is higher than the increase in cost.  Also, competition is very low currently, making it easier to sell.

What if my budget is less than Rs 2,000,000?

We can customize the size of the project based on your budget.  We will show you the respective figures and you choose if you wish to proceed or not.  We have a list of people with a lower budget, partnership can be the solution.

What is the return on investment?

10x upwards over a period of 5 years.

What are the risks associated with an Aquaponics Farming Business?

Climatic conditions, Fire & Theft, Disease.

Are there ways to mitigate the risks?

Absolutely.

Are there finance facilities for such projects?

Yes.

What kind of support do you provide for the success of the business?

We have and provide everything you need for the Business to succeed.  We can even partner up and do the business together.
